Training wheels – perhaps not the most exciting wheelset in the road cyclist’s collection but the winter training wheel has a vital role to play. Winter riding is about getting the miles in when and where you can. Long rides on a sunny weekend, to and from work a couple a days a week and a club run for coffee and cake. With the move towards low spoke count factory wheels the demand for 32 hole winter training wheels is higher than ever. Why go for a higher spoke count? The more spokes we use the less work each spoke has to do to keep the wheel true and working correctly. The load is evenly spread amongst them. We use a brass nickel plated nipple with ABS plastic insert for durability. Weight – 1890g a pair (no tape or QRs).
Rims – the DT Swiss R460 is a versatile tubeless ready all around road rim and a Strada favourite. At 460 grams, the R460 is quickly proving to be light but not sacrificing strength, stiffness and stability. The increasingly popular 23mm wide profile mimics a tubular tyre, where the advantage can be felt immediately while taking corners as the tyre is no longer shaped as a light bulb but like an upside down U. The rim can set up tubeless with a kit supplied by us from DT Swiss. This high quality good value DT Swiss rim is available in 32 hole with a black finish. We can remove the decals from the DT Swiss R460 winter training wheels if required for a stealthier low key look. We seal the inside of the rim with a high-performance anti-corrosion wax to reduce the risk of corrosion damage in bad riding conditions typical of the British winter.
Hubs – we lace the R460 rim to the almost bombproof Shimano 105 5800 series 10-11 speed hub. This well sealed traditonal cup and cone bearing hub means these are super reliable and easy to service yourself. Although not the lightest hubs around the 105 make the perfect heavy mileage companion. Considering they come with a pair of good quality quick releases it’s no surprise we consider them well up to the task of winter training. Campagnolo hubs on request.
Spokes – we use the Sapim Race double butted spoke in silver with a brass nickel plated nipple with ABS plastic insert for durability. Black spoked version available too.
Brake pads – we recommend Swissstop BXP (blue) pads to maximise brake performance poor conditions and to increase the life of the rim through reduced wear.
Tyres – these wheel will work with a 23, 25 or 28c tyre. We recommend pressures according to rider weight but these are typically lower than with a narrow rim. We can supply Maxis Padrone TR, Continental GP4000s II or 4 season tyres with these wheels.
All wheels are supplied with rim tape fitted and a true for life warranty. We recommend regular cleaning with a ph neutral agent (quality car shampoo for example).
