The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 has been developed for cyclists who can appreciate it because of its reliability, perfect single gear ratios, wide range of gears, low maintenance and easy operation; its weight and efficiency are ideal even for self supported long distance racing. The sealed gearbox ensures reliability and durability even under the toughest conditions. The even increments of 13.6% between gears make it possible to ride continuously at peak performance. The overall range makes sure that you always have access to the right gear regardless of situation. Pure fun is guaranteed. The SPEEDHUB 500/14 is operated by a twist shifter which shifts simply by pulling separate cables up or down. The indexing of the shifting lies not in the shifter as with common designs, but inside the hub. There is no wear on the indexing system nor need to adjust it.

The Rohloff Speedhub may not to be everyone’s taste but the clever design allows a cyclist to opt for a wide set of 14 evenly spaced gears and minimal maintenance on a variety of bicycles – commuter, MTB, CX and long distance touring. Riders using the Rohloff comment on the ability to jump 5 gears in one go which is handier than you think plus the ability to change gears when stationary. The chain is kept running in straight line which helps increase it’s lifespan. It’s a conversation starter and other riders may think they are being overtaken by a single speeder if they don’t look close enough! The rear wheel is un-dished (the rim usually is dished towards the cassette side of the wheel) so it is stronger. It is quieter than a regular derailleur system with no noise during shifts. An oil change is recommend / required every 2500 miles. You can use cheaper 7-8 speed chains. Longer sprocket and chainring life. Adjust it when it’s fitted and then it requires no adjustment – it just works. Tip – select the front chainring for optimal gearing up and down the gears.

About Rohloff – Rohloff AG was established in 1986 by Bernhard and Barbara Rohloff as a GmbH to produce and market the S-L-T 99 High Reliability Bicycle Chain. The use of our chains in the Tour De France made the Rohloff S-L-T 99 immediately internationally renowned. Since then, great sporting achievements have been annually accomplished thanks to the reliability of this chain. Plenty of extreme travellers who are riding on extreme tours and expeditions, e.g. through the ice of Greenland and the desert sands all around the earth have put their faith on the quality and long life of all Rohloff products.
Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 – the possibilities of an alternative gear system had been thought over by Rohloff for a long time. All advantages of the derailleur system (low weight, high working efficiency, large range of gears, etc.) were retained whereas the known disadvantages (high maintenance, low level of dirt resistance, short wear, etc.) were excluded.
As a result of plenty of years investigation and designing, the high performance gearhub with 14 gears was ready for testing at the end of 1996. After intensive research and development, the production could start in 1999. Since then, thousands of gear hubs have left the production line every year and at the end of 2002, there were approx. 20,000 SPEEDHUB 500/14´s in use worldwide.

Close to the technology of the car industry, the fully encapsulated gear mechanism runs within an oil bath to guarantee a long life for the hub even under extreme riding conditions.
The engagement of the gears is controlled within the hub itself and so it runs adjustment and maintenance free. The even gear increases of 13.6% ensure that the rider can always ride to his/her optimum performance. The large overall range of gears (526%) ensures that there is always the correct gear available for every type of riding situation. Pure cycling fun is guaranteed!
