“Hi Jonathan, I’ve just seen the fantastic looking Kinesis Pro6 cyclocross bike on your website, so this has spurred me into action. You may remember the fantastic wheels I bought from Strada a couple of months ago: PMP hubs, Sapim CX ray spokes and Velocity A23 rims. I promised you a report from the Three Peaks Cyclocross race towards the end of September, but, as is the way, I never got round to it.
I have to tell you how fantastic the wheels have been. I was never going to get a PB at the Three Peaks because the weather was pretty bad for most of it’s duration. It rained and rained and rained. The bogs became boggier and the rocky descents were like riding down glaciers (I assume). What struck me about the wheels, apart from the classic good looks, was how wide the rims are! I know that’s the point, but it’s not until you get a tyre on the rim that it becomes obvious.
The Maxxis Raze tyres suddenly had a far more ‘squat’ profile and proper shoulder knobs. When riding this translated into much, much more predictable cornering. You can lean the bike over and trust it won’t wash out. The extra grip is amazing, whether climbing or descending. The ride is also more comfortable, but not at the expense of speed. I find myself blasting over stuff at much higher speeds and not feeling every last bump. I am sure this translates into a little less fatigue on longer rides.
I have attached a couple of pics from the Three Peaks. Sorry for the poor quality, they were taken on my steamed up phone, shortly after a torrential downpour!”
