Carl from Surrey wanted a set of wheels for the Paris – Roubaix Sportif in April. We decided on Hope hubs in Gunsmoke combined with Sapim Race spokes and Velocity A23 rims. Carl told us he was “heavy on kit” so we decided on a 36 hole rear rim and 28 hole front to ensure they coped with the Flandrian cobbles and beyond. Darren opted for 3 cross lacing on the rear drive side, 2 cross on the non drive side and 2 cross on the front. He used brass nipples for durability and Spoke Freeze to ensure they won’t vibrate loose. Carl rode them for the first time last saturday and this morning he emailed me and said:
“Hi Jonathan, the wheels had 116 miles put on them on the first ride and were great. I was running new Vittoria Pavés and the combo was really smooth. The extra rolling resistance seemed negligible but the comfort increase was noticeable. Cheers, Carl.”
Weight 1729g, price £380. Riding Paris – Roubaix with your mates priceless… Good luck Carl.
