Edit: Built C4 V-22 wheelset photos are now online in the blog here.
In the van from Parcelforce today arrived a pair of V-22 rims from C4 Bicycle Components of California, USA. This 22mm wide rim from offers a wider base for the tyre to mount which allows for more contact of the tyre tread with the road. This increases corner grip and allows a lower pressure to be run due to the larger air volume. The V-22 is extruded specifically to C-4’s specifications. It is then rolled and sleeved. Connecting the rim with a sleeve may be the most expensive way to do it but is one of the best. It does not suffer from heat distortion as a welded rim may and is stronger and does not have the added weight of a pinned rim. The V-22 features a machined brake surface and is available in anodized black or powder coated white. It is available in 20/24/28/32 hole drillings for external nipples.
I will quote their website here – “Our first in house designed rim, it’s 22 x 24mm section is better suited to modern road frames with large chainstay sections than the trend to 23mm rims (it’s not just about rim width, but also it’s effects on tyre width that have to be taken into account). The rim width, depth and shape give great lateral stiffness, low spoke count wheels won’t feel noodly, higher spoke counts allow for great everyday wheels”.
I am looking forward to building these up and getting them out on the road. Edit: they are now built up and you can see them here.
C-4 are developing an interesting line of lightweight well engineered components and have some exciting products due out for 2011.
